Postsecondary Enrollment, Finance, Employees in Postsecondary Education and Academic Libraries

In fall 2024, approximately 16.8 million undergraduate students enrolled at Title IV institutions. Of these, 70 percent were enrolled in 4-year institutions, 29 percent in 2‑year institutions, and 2 percent in less-than-2-year institutions.

The National Center for Education Statistics released a new set of data and web tables today (January 6) that includes fully edited and imputed data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) spring 2025 collection. This collection included four survey components: Academic Libraries for fiscal year 2024, Fall Enrollment for fall 2024, Finance for fiscal year 2024, and Human Resources for fall 2024.

Other findings include:

  • In fall 2024, females accounted for the majority of college students, constituting 57 percent of all students at public Title IV institutions, 58 percent of all students at private nonprofit institutions, and 67 percent of students enrolled at private for-profit institutions.
  • Among Title IV institutions, the percentage of students enrolled exclusively in distance education courses in fall 2024 varied by institutional control. Approximately 52 percent of the 1.3 million students enrolled at private for-profit institutions were enrolled exclusively in distance education courses, as were 29 percent of the 4.3 million students enrolled at private nonprofit institutions and 23 percent of the 14.5 million students enrolled at public institutions.
  • Among Title IV institutions in fiscal year 2024, public 4-year institutions and administrative offices received approximately 15 percent of their revenues from tuition and fees, compared with around 26 percent at private nonprofit entities and 92 percent at private for-profit entities. During the same period, 24 percent of expenses at public 4-year entities were for instruction, compared with 27 percent at both private nonprofit and private for-profit entities.

Among Title IV institutions, the 2024-25 academic year adjusted 9-month average salary for the full-time professors in fall 2024 at public 4-year institutions was approximately $147,000 for the 60,900 males and $130,000 for the 37,000 females. At public 2-year institutions, the average salary for full-time professors was approximately $90,400 for the 5,600 males and $87,600 for 7,000 females.
