Data on Postsecondary Tuition, Fees and Degrees

Between 2019-20 and 20221-22, public institutions reported a 3 percent decrease for in-state students (after adjusting for inflation) and 4 percent decrease for out-of-state students. Private nonprofit institutions reported a decrease of approximately 2 percent, while private for-profit institutions reported a decrease of approximately 4 percent.

The National Center for Education Statistics released a new set of data and web tables today (August 23) that includes fully edited and imputed data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) fall 2021 collection. This collection included three survey components: Institutional Characteristics for the 2021-22 academic year, Completions covering the period July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021, and data on 12-Month Enrollment for the 2020-21 academic year.

Other findings include:

  • During the 2021-22 academic year, there were 5,975 Title IV institutions in the United States and other U.S. jurisdictions. Of this total, 2,703 were classified as 4-year institutions, 1,583 were 2-year institutions, and the remaining 1,689 were less-than-2-year institutions;
  • Of the roughly 3.6 million students receiving degrees or certificates at 4-year Title IV degree-granting institutions, about 57 percent received a bachelor’s degree. This percentage varied by control of institution, with approximately 62 percent of the 2.2 million students at public institutions receiving a bachelor’s degree, roughly 51 percent of the 1.1 million students at private nonprofit institutions receiving a bachelor’s degree, and approximately 40 percent of the 255,000 students at private for-profit institutions receiving a bachelor’s degree.
  • In fall 2021, the 12-month unduplicated headcount enrollment of students enrolled exclusively in distance education courses varied by institutional control. Of the approximately 9.3 million undergraduate students enrolled exclusively in distance education, around 7.3 million were enrolled at public institutions, 1.1 million at private nonprofit institutions, and 833,000 at private for-profit institutions.
