Results from the 2017 NAEP Mathematics and Reading Assessments



Key findings for both subjects are available in the NAEP Highlights.
  • The 2017 average reading score for the nation increased at grade 8 compared to 2015; there were no score changes for reading at grade 4, or mathematics at either grade.
  • Average scores for states in 2017 in reading showed 10 states scoring higher at grade 8 compared to 2015 with 1 state scoring lower and no states scoring higher at grade 4 with 9 states scoring lower. At grade 4 mathematics, 2 states/jurisdictions scored higher and 10 states/jurisdictions scored lower compared to 2015; at grade 8, two states/jurisdictions scored higher and three states scored lower compared to 2015.
  • Of districts that participated in 2015 and 2017, 1 TUDA district scored higher at grade 4, and 2 districts scored higher at grade 8 in reading compared to 2015; in grade 4 mathematics, 4 TUDA districts scored higher and 4 scored lower; in grade 8 mathematics, one district scored lower compared to 2015.
