Enrollment, Finance, Employees, and Academic Libraries in Postsecondary Education

The percent of revenues that postsecondary institutions received from tuition and fees in 2022–23 varied depending on the type of institution.

  • According to new data released today by the National Center for Education Statistics, in fiscal year 2022, approximately 25 percent of expenses at Title IV public 4-year institutions and administrative offices were for instruction, compared with 36 percent at public 2-year institutions and administrative offices and nearly 49 percent at public less-than-2-year institutions and administrative offices.

The National Center for Education Statistics released new data and a set of web tables today (January 16) that presents provisional data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) spring 2023 collection. This collection included four survey components: Enrollment for fall 2022; Finance for fiscal year 2021; data on employees in postsecondary education for fall 2022; and data for Academic Libraries for fiscal year 2022.

Other findings include:

  • In fall 2022, of the approximately 19.0 million students enrolled at Title IV institutions, approximately 15.8 million were undergraduates and approximately 3.2 million were enrolled as graduate students. Of the 15.8 million undergraduate students, approximately 68 percent were enrolled in 4-year institutions, 30 percent in 2‑year institutions, and 2 percent in less-than-2-year institutions.
  • In fiscal year 2022, Title IV public 4-year institutions and administrative offices received approximately 18 percent of their revenues from tuition and fees and about 19 percent from appropriations.
  • Title IV institutions and administrative offices reported employing approximately 3.9 million individuals in fall 2022. Of the 3.9 million individuals, approximately 2.6 million were employed full-time and 1.3 million were employed part-time.
