New Data on Enrollment, Finance, Employees, and Academic Libraries

The percent of revenues that postsecondary institutions received from tuition and fees in 2020-21 varied greatly depending on the type of institution.

According to new data released today by the National Center for Education Statistics, public 4-year institutions and administrative offices received about 20 percent of their revenues from tuition and fees in Fiscal Year (FY) 2020, compared with just over 34 percent at private nonprofit entities and 94 percent at private for-profit entities.

The National Center for Education Statistics released a new data and a set of web tables today (September 14) that presents preliminary data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) spring 2021 collection. NCES does not regularly release preliminary data for the IPEDS data collection, however, due to the high level of interest in these data due to impacts of the coronavirus pandemic the spring 2021 preliminary data are being released as an exception. This collection included four survey components: Enrollment for fall 2020; Finance for fiscal year 2020; data on employees in postsecondary education for Fall 2020; and data for Academic Libraries for fiscal year 2020.

Other findings include:

  • In fall 2020, of the approximately 19.4 million students enrolled at Title IV institutions, approximately 16.2 million were undergraduates and approximately 3.1 million were enrolled as graduate students. Of the 16.2 million undergraduate students, 67 percent were enrolled in 4-year institutions, 31 percent in 2year institutions, and 2 percent in less-than-2-year institutions.
  • In fiscal year 2020, approximately 26 percent of expenses at public 4-year entities were for instruction, compared with approximately 39 percent at public 2-year entities and nearly 51 percent at public less-than-2-year entities.
  • Title IV institutions and administrative offices reported employing approximately 3.9 million individuals in fall 2020. Of the 3.9 million individuals, approximately 2.6 million were employed full-time and 1.3 million were employed part-time.
