New What Works Clearinghouse Report: Carnegie Mellon University’s Open Learning Initiative

The What Works Clearinghouse recently reviewed the research on Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU’s) Open Learning Initiative and its impacts on four-year college students. The results are summarized in an IES intervention report.

CMU’s Open Learning Initiative provides online courses and learning materials to instructors and learners at low or no cost that can be presented in blended or purely online formats. Open Learning Initiative courses feature learning activities with immediate feedback for students and a dashboard for instructors to monitor student progress. Based on the research, the What Works Clearinghouse found that CMU’s Open Learning Initiative may increase credit accumulation and persistence but has inconsistent effects on academic achievement for four-year college students.
