Postsecondary Coursetaking and Financial Aid Awards of Fall 2009 Ninth-Graders Who Enrolled in Postsecondary Education After High School

A new report, High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09): A First Look at the Postsecondary Transcripts and Student Financial Aid Records of Fall 2009 Ninth-Graders, provides selected findings related to postsecondary coursetaking and financial aid of fall 2009 ninth-graders who enrolled in postsecondary education after high school.

Transcript data indicate that among fall 2009 ninth-graders whose first postsecondary enrollment after high school was 2013–14
  • 41 percent had taken at least one remedial course as of June 2016; and
  • 91 percent had attempted some STEM credits as of June 2016. Students who had attempted any STEM credits attempted an average 22 STEM credits, earned an average of 19 STEM credits, and their mean STEM GPA was 2.4.
Student records indicate that among fall 2009 ninth-graders who enrolled in postsecondary education after high school
  • 70 percent received an average of $8,100 in federal Title IV aid, 34 percent received an average of $2,900 in state aid, and 40 percent received an average of $9,500 in institutional aid during their first academic year at their first primary institution; and
  • 45 percent took out federal, state, or institutional loans to pay for their education during their first academic year at their first primary institution. These student borrowers took out an average of $5,600 in loans to attend that institution that year.
