Changes in Undergraduate Program Completers’ Borrowing

The National Center for Education Statistics released a new Data Point today (August 20), entitled Changes in Undergraduate Program Completers’ Borrowing Rates and Loan Amounts by Age: 1995–96 Through 2015–16. This Data Point examines the percentage of undergraduate students who had ever borrowed for postsecondary education and compares borrowing rates and loan amounts among five age groups from 1995–96 through 2015–16.
  • Among undergraduate borrowers who had completed or expected to complete a degree or certificate, the average cumulative amount borrowed increased for all five age groups between 1995–96 and 2015–16.
  • The borrowing rate for undergraduates age 50 or older increased by 45 percentage points over 20 years.
