This First Look, Public Elementary and Secondary School Student Enrollment and Staff Counts from the Common Core of Data: School Year 2009–10, presents national and state levels data on student enrollment by grade and by race/ethnicity within grade, the numbers of teachers and other education staff, and several student/staff ratios for the 2009-10 school year. The Common Core of Data (CCD) is a universe survey of elementary and secondary public schools in the U.S. and territories. Findings include:
• Public elementary and secondary schools had 49.4 million students in membership in school year 2009–10.
• In school year 2009–10, public elementary and secondary schools and local education agencies employed a total of 6.4 million FTE staff, and of the FTE staff, 51 percent were teachers.
